Common Mistake

Don't Match by Wattage Alone

Two sources with the same number on the label can be entirely different parts. Six things have to line up.

Laser architecture

Lamp-pumped YAG and QCW fiber are not interchangeable. This is decided before power is even discussed.

Average and peak power

On QCW the peak inside the pulse sits far above the average rating. Matching one without the other gets you the wrong part.

Feedback mode

Voltage and current feedback platforms drive the lamp differently, and the control side expects one of them.

Cooling

Heat load has to land somewhere. A more powerful source in the same cooling circuit is an upgrade that fails in week two.

Electrical requirements

Supply voltage, phase and current draw at the destination — checked before shipping, not after it arrives.

Optical & mechanical fit

Mounting, beam delivery and the space it has to occupy. The commonest reason a correct source still will not go in.

Questions Buyers Ask About Laser Sources

Usually, yes. The label carries the architecture, power and often the feedback mode, which is most of what a replacement match needs. Send a photo of it plus the machine model and we will tell you what fits before you commit to anything.

Sometimes. The source is rarely the obstacle — cooling and the electrical supply are. A higher-power source in an unchanged cooling circuit is the most common upgrade that disappoints, so we check that first and tell you if it means changing more than the source.

Not as a drop-in. The two architectures drive, cool and deliver the beam differently, and the control side of the machine expects one of them. Moving between them is a machine-level change rather than a source swap — worth discussing as a new configuration.

Often not. On a lamp-pumped platform 200 W is an average tied to the lamp discharge; on QCW, 200 W average comes with 2,000 W peak inside the pulse. Feedback mode, cooling and mounting differ too. Matching on the wattage alone is how the wrong part gets ordered.

It depends on duty rather than on power alone. If the machine works in a warm room, runs for long stretches, or has ever derated in the afternoon, extra cooling capacity is worth more than extra wattage. Tell us the hours and the ambient and we will say which way it falls.

Yes. For OEM work the conversation starts with your optical and mechanical interfaces, the control side, and expected volumes — the electrical and cooling requirements follow from the configuration. Send those and we will tell you what is workable before quoting.
